Welcome
I wish to thank you for allowing me to be your commander for another year.  The past year has been quite a learning experience.  I will be the first to admit that I made some mistakes but, if I hadn't made any mistakes, I wouldn't have been doing anything.

With the help of the building committee we have changed a few things in the Post to improve the Post.  All the rest rooms were redone; first time in years.

I would like to congratulate the officers that were elected to serve for the coming year and I would also congratulate the Auxiliary officers that were elected and to thank those that are leaving office for a job well done.  Wilma & Linda, THANKS, and good luck on your future plans.

Memorial Day will be here soon.  We will have our usual Sunday night ceremony here at 1079.  I hope we have a large turnout to honor our deceased comrades.  Don't forget to fly your flag, and , if you need one to replace your old flag, we have all sizes here for sale at the Post.  A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors and remembers.  By honoring the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom we ensure that their heroic spirit will live on in this new century.  (From a speech given by President John F. Kennedy).

Memorial weekend will commence with Sunday evening services at the VFW Post Hall on Abbe Rd scheduled for 7 p.m.  The Military Order of the Purple Heart will officiate.

The Memorial day Parade will form at Court & 2nd St. at 9:00 AM and begin the march to Ridgelawn cemetery at 10:00 AM.  The route remains the same, Court to Broad to Washington Ave. to Harrison to cemetery where services will take place in front of the monument at 11:00 AM.  This year, more than ever because of the world situation, express your gratitude and proclaim your patriotism by attending these functions honoring those brave individuals who have passed on in defending your FREEDOMS.

POPPY DRIVE
Post 1079 Poppy Drive is slated for Thur, Fri, & Sat.,  May 2nd, 3rd, & 4th.   Do your part in assisting with this effort to raise funds for those vets who are confined to home or hospital bed.  Sign up in the Canteen for a collection spot.

And to all the comrades that live in other states, if you visit Elyria,  be sure to stop in at the Post and say hello. Sincerely, John Polgar, Commander.

Note:  The Election of Officers held on Apr 15th resulted in the following changes for the new year which begins July 1st. Commander John Polgar, Senior Vice Commander Stephen Kotai, Junior Vice Commander Alan J. Arnett, QM Frank West, Chaplain Robert Burdick, Surgeon Edward Selavko.  Also, two appointed officer changes..Adjutant, Marshall Williams, and DonaldLimer as Officer of the Day.  Congratulations to all and may you have a productive year.

Ladies Auxiliary News
Wilma Zech -President
Elections are over, and you have chosen a great leader.  Ruth Conrad, as your president.  Please give her your complete support.  Lorraine Cragin has gone in as her Senior Vice, and Sue McCallaster is the Jr. Vice.  I have gone in as your chaplain. Helen Krugman has retired, as has Cathy Eckhart: Ruby Burdick will be the treasurer.  Your will be getting 2003 Dues notices from her.  Those are the only changes; Eleanor will stay as the Conductress, Natalie Blaine as the Guard. We have the same trustees.  We are looking for a secretary, as Mabel is busy with her husband Cliff being ill. Not a hard job, and it pays $400 a year.

Dues are now well over due, for VFW and the Auxiliary!!  If you are not joining us, we would like to know why??  We need all the support we can get, not money wise, but through numbers.  We need to let those terrorists that we are a very strong organization, and we will stand up for our rights.   Reports from our chairman will be mailed this month, and convention is only a short time away.  It will be held in Columbus. The Ohio VOD speaker came in 2nd in the nation.
Send us your support ( your past due dues) NOW!

Thank you to all who have helped me with the Department of Ohio Junior Unit Conference we put on the middle of April.  We had 249 people at a banquet on Saturday evening, and another 30 join us for the Jr Unit conference meeting for a total of 279 on Sunday.  We fed them; even sending a sack lunch home with them, entertained them, picked up after them, and really did enjoy having them at our post.  It was a great event, and I thank especially my 1079 ladies, the commander and his wife Marian, the custodians at the post, and the Riffle Squad for escorting the 14 presidents of the units from all over the state of Ohio. Our Balloon release was spectacular on Saturday evening outside the post.
I thank all who have supported me this year.  All who helped with refreshments, programs, and just being a friend!  I am running for a National Council Member representative from area D.

May is our month for having Cathy in our canteen selling Mother/daughter/granddaughter tickets for our annual fling. This will be the first Tuesday in June  ($1 each).

May the good Lord bless and keep you, May your trouble all be few- Wilma
