May 2003 Newsletter
Well, Spring seems to have arrived at last, people working in their yards, golfers on the way to the links, bicycles and motorcycles up and down the roads, children on their skates and scooters. So, please comrades, be extra careful as you back out of your drive and as you drive to the mall or grocery store.
By the time you receive this letter we may have further information on the gaming laws. The Post has been awful quiet lately; not too many comrades at the bar. I hope that when the State finally issues us a license we can have the crowds that we had before.
Also, by the time this letter arrives we will have elected a new slate of officers who will assume their duties when the newly elected State officers are sworn in at the State Convention, June 22nd. Yours Truly has decided not to run for Cmdr again; 2 years is enough for me.
May is a busy month for the Post, The Poppy Drive will be May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. I will have a sign-up sheet on the board and I hope that everyone that can will sign up to work at one store or another. A couple hours isn't too much to ask of you comrades, is it? The auxiliary is also invited to sign up. Ed Selavko and myself are co-chairman.
Memorial Day is also coming up shortly. The Rifle Squad will be marching again in the parade, those still able. If anyone from the Post would like to join us, please do so. Put on your old uniform, if it still fits, and march along with us.
There are a lot of SUPPORT YOUR TROOPS rallies going on. If you have the time to go to a rally, Post 1079 will probably have one, if I can get some help to organize it. Will advertise it in the paper and on the radio as to when it will be.
Don't forget to sign up a new member today. Let's get our membership up where it belongs. We only need three (3) to be 100%.
John F. Polgar, Commander
MEMORIAL DAY 2003
The Memorial Day weekend begins with the Sunday evening service which will be hosted by the AMVETS at their Post Hall on South Middle Ave. commencing at 7 p.m., May 25th. On Monday, the 26th, the Parade forms on 2nd Street at 9 a.m. and kicks off at 10:00 following the familiar route to the cemetery where services, hosted by the American Legion Post 12, will commence at approximately 11:00. For those taking part in the Parade and Services a tureen luncheon will be held at the VFW Hall on South Abbe Rd. immediately after the cemetery ritual.
Besides remembering our fallen comrades, who rest in graves throughout the world , add a prayer for those brave men & women who now fight for our Freedom, at home and abroad.
FOR THE GOLFERS
VFW & American Legion will compete for "THE CUP" at the 4th annual Veterans Golf Classic. The Myrtle Beach-Based Tournament features competition and camaraderie for Veterans and Active Military Members.
This tournament will be held May 19 thru May 21, 2003 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and will feature competition between the two organizations for rights to "The Cup."
To determine the winner, officials will take the lowest score from each flight for both the VFW & AL after each round of competition. At the end of the event, the scores will be totaled and the organization with the lowest score will win the Cup. All VFW and AL members can participate in this battle for The Cup.
Entry includes three rounds of competitive golf and a practice round. The 54 holes will feature a different format each day. More info is available by calling 1-800-833-8798 or visiting www.VeteransClassic.com.

"In Memoriam"
The Post lost a dedicated VFW comrade with the demise of Thomas C. McCain who died on March 20th after being hospitalized with a heart condition. Tom served as Post Commander, 1959-60, and then in 1965 was elected to the office of Quartermaster , serving in this capacity until retiring in 1983. Tom,.. you will be missed! Rest in Peace.
