Welcome
Thank you one and all who participated in the Memorial Day activitities at the Post, in the Parade , and the placing of flags on the Veterans' graves.
The Post has ordered a monument to be installed on the walk at the Western Reserve Federal Cemetery. It should be installed by mid June.
Post 1079 will be represented at the Veterans booth at the Lorain County Fair. Stop in and check it out and also sign up for two $50.00 prizes to be given away each day. If you have any war souvenirs you would like to display at the booth, we would be pleased to show them. Contact Al Urbanek for more information.
Several of our Post members had a bad month in May. I hope that by the time this letter is received they will have recovered and ready to enjoy the summer and all the events scheduled here at the Post.
I regret to inform you comrades that the Buddy Poppy Drive sales were far short of what we did last year. Volunteers were needed to cover (12) stores, and we were only able to cover (4). And only part of the time at that! I am disappointed that more members did not volunteer. A two hour shift is not too much to expect for such a worthy cause. And I'm sorry to report that even the R.O.T.C. from Midview High School failed to turn out in full force to help us. The proceeds from the drive were about 50% less than previously received which means that the help we can give to needy veterans will be less. To those who did help, " Thank You". And as they say in the Navy, "Well Done"!
John F. Polgar, Commander
NOTE
Too many of our members have disregarded previous notes on the importance of having the right beneficiary on file for the Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance supplied FREE by the National VFW to all members. $1000 or $1500 dollars can help a lot during times of need. So, if circumstances call for a change in beneficiary, call (1-800-821-2606) or request a mail-in form from an officer. We have heard that too many have already found out the hard way and lost out. Frank T Wesr, QM
IMPORTANT NOTICE
POST BY-LAW CHANGE
At the Post meeting of May 20th, the following amendment to the Post By-laws was read to members present.
Paragraph under Article III, Sec 2 to be deleted and replaced with."Time: The stated meetings of the Post shall be on the 2nd Monday of each month. All regular meetings will be called to order at 8:00PM."
This newsletter shall constitute NOTICE to all members that this amendment will be voted on at the regular Post meeting on June 17, 2002. A 2/3rds majority is required for passage. If passed, it will be sent on to State & National for approval, and take effect in October, 2002. Please plan to attend this meeting.
MEMBERSHIP PINS
Roger will be presenting VFW longevity lapel pins at the June meeting. These pins are issued in 5 year increments, so make sure you attend and check to see if you are due for this award.
NOTE
One of the major concerns in times of crisis is having your important papers available. Many veterans fail to inform family members as to location of their DD214 (or Active Service Discharge Certificate). This document is always needed when applying for Vet's Benefits, either while alive or deceased. You were all reminded to have it recorded at the County Court House. If you didn't, DO IT NOW! And let them know.
ALSO.We are now in the Summer schedule for Post meetings; Only (1) per month thru Sept.; (3rd Monday only in June, July and Sept.; and the 1st Monday only in Aug.) Enjoy the Summer and attend the meetings you can. We'd like to see you!
NOTE:
Officers will be attending the VFW State Convention from Wed. June 26th to Sunday, June 30th.
Ladies Auxiliary News
Wilma Zech -President
Thank you to all the officers, chairman, active meeting attendees, VFW and Auxiliary members that support 1079 in many other ways. We had a good year! The year is done: reports have been mailed. I never got to meet 900 or more of you. I miss your hello, your input of what you would like the auxiliary to do - to be. "Re-set" your priorities for a new year. Think - use your beautiful mind - It is wise to re-evaluate our priorities - It determines what happens in our lives. We missed having you work the poppy drive we just had. It does make a difference in many lives.
We are asking you to join us for June 4th mother, grandmother, daughter, and granddaughter tureen dinner. Meat (chicken) bread & butter and drink on us, you bring the rest: Door prizes, entertainment, and only a dollar ($1) ticket from Cathy who has them available on Wednesday nights. Also, the Wednesday night activities, I have been told, will include Ladies on the second pool table.
Re examine, Re think, Re set your priorities and include the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. We have desires, need, wants: What we need is bonding love and companionship. Bond with your priorities and make the VFW Auxiliary one of them you bond with. Not leaving the job done by one - together is better. Allow your mind to think through what is important. WE NEED YOU BACK!!
VFW Ladies Aux.1079 received a NATIONAL AWARD. "Make a Difference Day" from the Points of Light. We were at a 4-H craft fair giving out Patriotic Materials and Safety reflective tape and leaflets for Halloween and bicycle. We are 1079 proud!! We also gave out classroom flags at the Joint Vocational School in Oberlin. We have heard from both our Adopted Military Units
