June 2003 Newsletter
As this will be my last newsletter I wish to thank all those who helped me to perform my duties as commander of Post 1079. Being commander takes a lot of time and effort, and without the support and help I could not have done my job. I enjoyed "for the most part" the last two years as commander and the years I spent as Jr & Sr Vice. Again, to all those who helped, a sincere THANK YOU!
I am looking forward to the day I am no longer commander. I am going to spend more time with my wife who has been a great help to me at the Post. I plan on golfing more often and also doing a lot of traveling as I will not have to attend so many meetings.
Thanks to all those who attended our Support the Troops program at our Post and also at the park in Elyria. As usual, not too many showed up. I guess once the war is over it's out of sight and out of mind. It's a shame. And to all my friends at the Post, I will be around, so I won't say "goodbye" just "so long for now". Yours in comradeship, John F. Polgar, Commander

BINGO REPORT
Most of you know the Post has applied for an "instant bingo" license. This is a necessary evil, if the Post wants to raise money legally for charitable purposes after July 1st.
In the meantime 100% of your donations at the bar are contributed to the Volunteer Services for Diabetics in Sheffield. This is a local charity that has been in existence for 20 some years, and will be one of the recipients of your donations, along with the VFW National Home for Children, after the Post receives its own bingo license.
The necessity of this annual license fee ,paid to the State of Ohio, will be an additional expense for the Post beside the fact that only 35% of the income generated may be retained by the Post for expenses. Unless a change is made in this percentage you can see that other methods will become necessary to increase the income to cover the day to day operations of the Post. To begin, Canteen prices will have to be brought up to date to cover the many merchandise cost increases the Post as absorbed through the years.
It's beginning to look like the days of the "FREEBEES", where the few took care of the many, will become passe'..and more of the membership will have to get involved in fund raising activities to keep the Post on a sound financial footing. Frank West, QM
