Welcome

The Officers and their wives attended the National Convention in Nashville, TN, August 24 to the 30th.  Vice President Cheney spoke at the joint opening session with the Auxiliary.

The Southern Conference nominated Huey Long for Junior Vice Commander in Chief even though he had a felony conviction.  At the election of officers he was defeated.  The rest of the election, in my book, was cut and dried.

The "Early Bird" dinners will be on October 12th & the 19th in the Post Hall.  Sterck Catering from Vermilion will provide the dinners.  Sign-up sheets for each of the two dates are in the Canteen.  Please sign the sheet for the date you plan to attend and mark it down so you don't forget.

Daylight Savings ends on October 27th., so don't forget to turn your clocks "BACK".

A few new members have joined the Post but not enough to offset the ones we have lost.  Like I said before, if everyone would sign up one new or re-instated member we could double our membership.  So please get out there and sign them up.  Losing comrades is our one big problem;  not getting new replacements is number two.  Getting people to volunteer at Post functions is number three.

If anyone is interested in joining the Honor Guard, see Pat LePore, or myself.  Job doesn't pay anything, but you will be performing a service for our departed comrades.

If you know of a comrade that is sick or in the Hospital, please notify the Post Chaplain, Bob Burdick.

And if you know of any comrade that lives by himself, check and make sure he is all right.  Call on the phone or knock on his door.  You may just save his life. John F. Polgar, Commander

"Happy Birthday" Post 1079
Chartered on October 9, 1923
For the first few months meetings were held in the City Council Chamber. In early 1924 meetings were held in the Grand Army of the Republic Hall on Broad Street.

Several moves occurred in the next several years. In 1926, the Post moved to Court Street. In 1929 it moved to the Sharp Building on Broad Street and moved in 1930 to the Woodmen Hall on Broad Street. It was a struggle to keep the Post going during those Depression years.

In 1934, the Post moved to the Stolzenburg building on Broad Street. In 1941, the Post purchased the property at 245 Second Street. The unit participated in public and charitable functions.
At a banquet in September 1945, at the Elks, the mortgage was burned. In 1946, disaster befell the Post. On Saturday evening, November 23 a fire which started in the basement completely destroyed the building. The commander immediately appointed a committee to find a meeting place and report to the membership.

In March 1947, the Post purchased the former Romec Pump building at 347 East Bridge Street. The burning of the mortgage of this building was celebrated in 1949. In 1972, the Post sold the property to the Urban Renewal agency and purchased five acres of land on South Abbe Road, where the new
Post home was completed in the spring of 1973.

The membership now stands at over 1500 plus members and its Ladies Auxiliary stands at over 900 plus members and recognized as one of the most active Post in the State of Ohio.
In time the Post grew in scope and members. It is now  the largest Post in the State of Ohio.

CANCER PINS
Make your donation to the Robert Combs Cancer Fund.  Cancer Pins are available  from the display board  located on the glass case in the Canteen.  Deposit your donation in the box provided and help yourself to a pin off the board.  This is a worthy cause and a painless way to assist  those who have contracted this hideous disease.  Part of the funds go to research, and the rest goes toward direct assistance through the State office of the VFW
